Your songs sound too mechanical and need more emotion

If your songs sound too mechanical or they lack emotion, then you are probably writing from your head and not your heart. Sometimes this occurs because your songwriting techniques aren't transparent yet. With practice, your skills will be less of the focal point and your message will take center stage. Sometimes it's a matter of the emotional state you are in as you write. If you find yourself "writing from your head" try to get into the emotional state that you want to convey with your song.

A simple technique to bring your lyric writing back into the body, which is where your emotions reside, is to use the five senses when you write. Writing that includes sensory language keeps your listener involved viscerally as well as intellectually. Show, don't tell. Avoid writing about an experience but write from the experience. Write as if you are inside the emotion of your lyric. Then show us what it looks like, feels like, sounds like, smells like, and tastes like.

It's important to remember that as you master songwriting techniques, your songs will sound mechanical at times. That's part of growing as a songwriter. Let go of the idea that every song is going to be great and just write as many songs as you can.

The more songs you write, the greater probability that you will write a great song. This is the Way of the Samurai Songwriter.

I am a total amateur when it comes to songwriting, but after Samurai Songwriting issue 1 and the recent John Lennon teleseminar, I'm already quickly developing song ideas. The Samurai Songwriting 'Songwriting Tool Table' is such a valuable tool for breaking down the structure of songs and giving you insight as to how the masters came up with such great hits that stand the test of time.

I have received lessons 1 and 2 and am quite happy with the contents; the audio, the pdfs and the spreadsheet file. One of the things that aspiring songwriters hear all of the time is to analyze other well written songs, but there is no instruction on how to do that. The Songwriting Tool Table provides the means to do that, and the example given with the lesson shows exactly how to use it to get the most benefit. I also like that there is no long term commitment, so, although I am quite satisfied with the program now, I am free to stop if my situation changes or I feel that I am not getting value from the program. Thanks, and keep 'em coming.
