You want to write interesting chord progressions and harmonies

Many songwriters grow impatient in the search for new and interesting sounds and follow a path that leads them away from mastery over the fundamentals. They want to cut off the head of the dragon before they learn how to hold the sword properly. This is a common pitfall of the songwriting student and the study of harmony.

When you begin to understand the physics inside the world of diatonic harmony, you see a power at work much greater than the personal ego that wants to be noticed and celebrated for ingenuity and innovation. Let go of your desire to be different and better than everyone else and just master the fundamentals. After all, you can't help but be unique. Therefore, the desire to be unique is wasted energy. Don't allow boredom to enter into your psyche as you study the basics of harmony.

Every single tone is made up of many tones, called the overtone series, which contribute to the total sound. Our most common chord progression, I-IV-V, has a natural kinetics built into it backed by physics that create the most powerful harmonic motion in existence.

Begin with simple diatonic harmony, I-IV-V, and always come back to it. This harmony is the fundamental building blocks of music. Master its sound. Don't give up on its simplicity but use its constraints to challenge your songwriting ability.

To broaden your understanding of harmony, study what sounds good to you. Allow your ear to show you the way to new and interesting chord progressions and harmonies. When you find something you like, learn it. Write new melodies over the harmonies you find. Experiment.

The most important thing is for you to develop your ear and learn how to listen. When you learn how to listen, you will be open to new and fresh as well as tried and true harmonies that are all around you. When you develop your ear, you will be able to translate everything you hear in your mind into something for the rest of the world to hear.

Master the fundamentals. This is the Way of the Samurai Songwriter.

I am a total amateur when it comes to songwriting, but after Samurai Songwriting issue 1 and the recent John Lennon teleseminar, I'm already quickly developing song ideas. The Samurai Songwriting 'Songwriting Tool Table' is such a valuable tool for breaking down the structure of songs and giving you insight as to how the masters came up with such great hits that stand the test of time.

I have received lessons 1 and 2 and am quite happy with the contents; the audio, the pdfs and the spreadsheet file. One of the things that aspiring songwriters hear all of the time is to analyze other well written songs, but there is no instruction on how to do that. The Songwriting Tool Table provides the means to do that, and the example given with the lesson shows exactly how to use it to get the most benefit. I also like that there is no long term commitment, so, although I am quite satisfied with the program now, I am free to stop if my situation changes or I feel that I am not getting value from the program. Thanks, and keep 'em coming.
